Inspiration for All Walls – Jeremy Lin Posters Now on Zazzle

by Patrick Briggs, Zazzle Maniac

I love a good inspirational story and there’s no better than the story of Jeremy Lin. An unheralded player for many NBA teams, Jeremy bounced around the league until he got his chance with the New York Knicks this year. Since the start of the season he has shined bright, proving his detractors wrong and kicking off a wave of fan fervor. It’s great to see examples of someone that has the heart and the passion to pursue his dreams and never give up. To me, it’s same kind of passion I see around the Zazzle offices as we continually work to build the world’s largest customization platform and community for artists, customers, and manufacturers. That’s why we’re happy to have a great collection of Jeremy Lin posters on Zazzle through our partnership with Getty and the NBA. He’s an inspirational message for basketball fans and customization fans alike! You better believe some of the below posters are going to make it onto the Zazzle Office walls.

Zazzle Featured Seller Interview with Sarita_K

Music and the Whale Mousepad

by Jes, Zazzle Community Producer

New Zazzler Sarita, from the Artsprojekt store sarita_k, talks with us about her artistic inspirations and what she’s looking forward to.  Check out the interview below and don’t forget to check out her store sarita_k!

Zazzle: Give us a brief bio, where you’re from and when you started making art.

Sarita: I studied my art education at San Jose State University’s School of Art and Design in California, where I graduated with a BFA in Animation and Illustration in 2007. After graduation, I worked in Seattle, Washington for ArenaNet and gained valuable experience working on the game, Guild Wars 2 as an Environment Artist. Eventually moved back to Dubai and began working as a full-time illustrator and concept artist. Currently, I’m working at a casual gaming studio and will have two ipad games releasing soon. In addition to gaming, I also love illustrating children’s books and will have my first e-book published very soon.

Zazzle: What is your inspiration for your designs?

Sarita: A lot of my work is inspired by animals and nature; I think they’re wonderful creatures and I’m just in awe of their beauty and tenderness. When I lived in the Bay Area, I used to visit the San Francisco Zoo often and draw the animals – my favorite were the polar bears because they were so playful! I also love watching the National Geographic Channel, and there’s always something in there that instantly inspires me, whether it’s an elephant or a cute little beetle.  Plus, I think animals a great way to connect with children, whether is trying to get a message across or reading them a story.

Zazzle: When you’re not creating art, what are your other hobbies?

Sarita:  I’m a movie-junkie and love going for film festivals whenever I can. I also swim and play guitar regularly.

Zazzle: Any artists you look up to when ti comes to designing?

Sarita:  Wow, there’s so many! But some of my favorites are Lisa Frank, Pascal Campion, Daniel Krall, Charuca Vargas, Sam Bosma, Jon Klassen, Buff Monster and Daniel Dociu.

Zazzle: What is your favorite Zazzle feature? How do you use it?

Sarita:  Tweetfering! – You can really use it to promote your products directly. It’s a great way to market yourself!

Zazzle: What has been your favorite design you’ve created, and why?

Sarita: My favorite design so far has been “Dragon Love”. It’s this cute little dragon I made that can’t breathe fire, but only exudes little hearts from her mouth. This piece was inspired by a crush I have on someone. lol!

Zazzle: What was the very first thing you made on Zazzle?

Sarita: The first thing I made on Zazzle was my Capricorn Mug – I thought it would be a fun illustration to start with!

Zazzle: Being a newer seller on Zazzle, what are you looking forward to the most?

Sarita: Getting more recognition and also being able to put my designs on new products! I was so excited when Zazzle started offering iPad and iPhone cases, and I can’t wait to see what’s coming next!

Zazzle: What got you interested in selling your art on Zazzle?

Sarita: I was actually invited to join ArtsProjekt, and I noticed how many phenomenal artists were posting their work on Zazzle. I knew I had to be a part of that! Plus it’s a great platform to market yourself and also make a some money too!

Zazzle: What tips can you give someone who is just starting out on Zazzle?

Sarita: Be sure to check out Zazzle University! I was really lost when I first joined, but once I thoroughly read through all the tutorials and I was able to get around much better.

Thanks Sarita!

Tony Hawk Teams Up With Zazzle – Awesome Custom Skateboard Decks

Zazzle Gets It’s Skate On With Tony Hawk Foundation

by

Is that Tony Hawk, the most famous skateboarder in history, showing off a Zazzle skate deck? Why YES, it is! In fact, Zazzle just teamed up with Tony Hawk Foundation to auction off thirty “Create Your Own Pro Model” decks at two successful fundraising events during its 8th Annual benefit. Our made-to-order-technology allowed Tony Hawk and team to offer the decks to lucky auction winners, who will have their own names applied to the Zazzle decks during production, effectively creating their own pro skateboard models endorsed by Tony Hawk Foundation. The two events raised almost $1.4 million, and the Zazzle decks at each event sold out in minutes!

Zazzle is proud to support Tony Hawk Foundation celebrity fundraisers to benefit Stand Up For Skateparks, a non-profit which has raised $5 million dollars to build high-quality skateparks in nearly 500 low income areas around the US.

The first of two DaGeDar Presents Stand Up For Skateparks benefits took place Sunday October 6th at the home of Ron Burkle, Green Acres Estate, in Beverly Hills, California. Within the span of an hour, a Vert Demo with Tony Hawk, Shaun White, Bucky Lasek, Mat Hoffman, Mitchie Brusco, and Lincoln Ueda was followed by an intimate set by the Grammy-winning duo The Black Keys. In addition to the Vert Demo and The Black Keys performance, the family-oriented event featured interactive activities for kids of all ages, great food, and live and silent auctions. Auction items included a custom Triumph Scrambler 900 “Hawkized” by Roland Sands Design, a Tony Hawk Edition Customized Ford Explorer by Galpin Auto Sports and DUB, and autographed skateboard decks from Tony Hawk and other top pros like Chris Cole, Ryan Sheckler, Nyjah Huston, and Shaun White. Other auction items included a Kelly Slater-autographed surfboard, as well as autographed guitars from Jane’s Addiction, Green Day, and Rancid, plus luxury vacations and much more.

The Beverly Hills benefit raised $755,000 for the Tony Hawk Foundation’s mission to build free public skateparks in low-income areas, providing local, at-risk youth an opportunity to participate in a fun, safe and healthy new activity.

DaGeDar Presents Stand Up For Skateparks was Co-Chaired by Tony Hawk and fellow THF Board Member and skate legend Mike Vallely, with other notable supporters including Andre Agassi, Michael “Flea” Balzary, Ron Burkle, Chantal and Stephen Cloobeck, Jamie Lee Curtis, Patrick Dempsey, Jon Favreau, Perry Farrell, Leeza Gibbons, Brian Austin Green, Robin and Danny Greenspun, Ben Harper, Mat Hoffman, Terry Kennedy, Anthony Kiedis, Bobby Kotick, Chuck Liddell, Howie Mandel, Sal Masekela, Lance Mountain, Andrew and Trina Pascal, Andrew Reynolds, David Spade, Bill Walton, and Shaun White.

“It was our best event by far,” said Tony Hawk. “The auction items were one-of-a-kind, and the skate demo was one of the best sessions I have ever witnessed (or taken part in). The Black Keys were the icing on the cake—the crowd was in awe.”

Many celebrities and their families were among the guests in Beverly Hills, including Mark Wahlberg, Jon Favreau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bill Walton, Perry and Etty Farrell, Chuck Liddell, Kat Von D, Mike ”Rooftop” Escamilla, Fred Durst, Rob Machado, Tillman the Skateboarding Dog, dance troupe Chi-Town’s Finest Breakers, Kevin Staab, Jason Ellis, Jamie Thomas, Stevie Williams, Holly Robinson Peete, Lance Mountain, Chris Cole, Stefan Lessard, Rodney Mullen, and Legoland’s Darth Vader.

2011 Fall Fashion Trends

August 29, 2011 by Jenny, zTrend Commentator

I know little, to nothing, about fashion. Let’s just say, at this very moment I am wearing jorts. For those of you unfamiliar with “jorts,” they are jean shorts you cut yourself – usually with very little precision. So, for a fashion trend blog, I decided to hand over the responsibility to two very fashionable Zazzlers, Elyse and Lisa (you may remember them from the Sombrero Challenge) – self-proclaimed Glam Gurus. I completely agree, their outfits tend to make me feel badly about myself. That must mean something. Take it away ladies…

Have you ever walked into a room and realized that your style was slightly reminiscent of the homeless gentleman that you saw rummaging through the trash a few blocks down?  Well fear not!  The Glam Gurus are about to break down this season’s hottest trends on our favorite celebrities and accompanied Zazzle products.

Animal Prints

Where do you stand on animal prints? Should this feisty pattern be confined to the bedroom, or can we let go of our inhibitions and dare to release our inner wild side?  Either way, animal prints are not only back in style, they are better than ever!

Light Gray

Move over basic black, there is a new hot (or cool) color trending for suits! Light gray is the color of choice for those who aren’t afraid to step outside of that black box.

Polka Dots

Okay girls, we all have those cringe-worthy pictures of us sporting a voluminous polka dot dress, usually accompanied with a gargantuan bow.  But now our favorite nostalgic pattern has re-emerged with not only more color, but a more flattering silhouette.

Herringbone and Houndstooth

Get ready and gear up for herringbone and houndstooth to make a Betty White-sized comeback!  These fun retro inspired prints can be found on everything from newsboy hats to sexy suits.

Lace

Lace — naughty or nice? For some of us, lace has us channeling the unfortunate “lingerie as outerwear” trend from last year.  But to our delight that trend has morphed into a more appropriate and classy version.

Hope this gives you an idea of what to expect in the fall. Leave us examples of these trends in the comments below and let us know if we left any of your favorites out!

Stay stylish Zazzlers ;)

Engineering Virality with Zazzle and QR Code T-Shirts (via Zazzle Blog)

Engineering Virality with Zazzle and QR Code T-Shirts

Engineering Virality with Zazzle and QR Code T-Shirts

By Patrick Briggs, Zazzle Maniac

Andreas Weigend, social/mobile technology expert and friend of Zazzle, recently created an interesting experiment with the Social Data Lab and a class at Stanford University on geolocation and social media.  Even though it’s summer, check out his guest blog about how his students used Zazzle shirts creatively for this project!

The Social Data Revolution: Engineering Virality
In a class on Social Data, Stanford students learned the value of geolocation, particularly its role in visualizing trends and identifying patterns. Each student was given a unique QR code linked to a justnear.me website that he or she designed to promote a personal cause. The students were then asked to spread their campaign by any means necessary to get the greatest number of QR scans and “check-ins” across a diverse range of geolocations.

Zazzle Shirts as a Launch Pad
In addition to typical marketing campaigns such as posting flyers and social networking, the students also decided to take a more creative approach.  They used Zazzle, an online platform for creating custom products, to design “Social Data Revolution” t-shirts.  Each student’s t-shirt had the same design, but displayed their own unique QR bar code on the front and back.  Armed with their Zazzle t-shirts, the students took to the streets and spread their campaigns through what turned out to be one of the most powerful marketing techniques available — natural human curiosity.  All around the Stanford campus and throughout Palo Alto, students could be found donning their black SDR shirts, inevitably followed by a trail of curious onlookers wondering what these shirts meant.

Once each student received their shirt, it was up to them to design an incentive system to promote usage and engagement with the code. An offline incentive and viral campaign was the goal for the original hook; the second part of the assignment involved creating an engaging site that would promote online virality. In this two-part system the students examined the best structures to translate offline incentive systems into online participation.

Offline Incentives
For the first part of the assignment, students took a wide range of approaches. Some guerrilla tactics were utilized such as posting images of the code around campus with various strategies of engagement.  Some students promoted a philanthropic cause (Charity Water) or the latest startup craze (Venmo mobile banking).  Others offered food in exchange for scans (a free sandwich for one measly QR scan ain’t bad!)  Still others left ambiguous puzzles or questions designed to intrigue the viewers into scanning.  Flyers with QR codes were found all over campus in the engineering buildings, design school, law school, near ATMs and drinking fountains, in restaurants and cafes, posted in libraries and media rooms… bottom line is flyers were placed anywhere and everywhere that participants thought they might be able to draw an active audience.

Online strategies were even more creative with one student cashing in on his Facebook birthday wishes by replying to every individual post with a request for a QR scan. Another participant tugged on her friends’ heartstrings by sending out pictures of her newborn baby… with a QR code attached of course.  More lighthearted approaches involved the promise of funny YouTube videos and a campaign devised to feed off the Stanford – Berkeley rivalry.

While designing the original incentive, students were asked to examine the limitations of their strategies and the implications in a geotagging context. For example, if the codes were posted around campus or promoted solely through Zazzle t-shirts, then that student would likely only get codes close to the Stanford area.  If the code was blasted on Facebook, however, there might be a greater chance of getting scans from around the world.  Another barrier the students faced is that not everyone recognizes QR codes or has an app downloaded to scan the code and check-in.

justnear.me
The unique QR code for each student was linked to a new application, www.justnear.me, developed by Rio Akasaka. The application lets you track the locations where individual scans are made. The check-in platform requests Facebook data to verify unique users when gleaning data. All the scans can then be inputted into a Google map and visualized geographically.

On each QR landing page, users can leave messages, creating a space for discourse on the specific sites.

Online Engagement
Once the users reached the landing page, students were encouraged to develop engaging online material that promoted virality.  For one student this meant making a donation to one of four charities, chosen based on user votes.  This created an incentive for users to check-in, post a comment and send the link on to their own social networks.  Another philanthropic approach was to volunteer one additional hour of community service for every ten scans.  A startup company promised a $1 credit to your account for every additional friend you brought to their site.  Other sites led the users to games or funny videos so there would be intrinsic motivation to share.  Prizes were given to students with original content, dynamic user engagement, and high visitor count.

Bounding Forward
From grand scheme projects to small-scale needs, QR codes combined with Zazzle’s ability to put a unique design on almost anything, promises a universe of possibilities!
